History of Summerlin
Before Summerlin was a bustling community it was 25,000 acres of empty Las Vegas land that was purchased by Howard Hughes, Jr. in the 1950s. It was by the 1980s when the Summa Corporation (The Howard Huges predecessor) realized the potential for real estate.
They transformed it into the most well-known highly amenitized residential area in the country. The name Summerlin was given to the community after Hughes' paternal grandmother, Jean Amelia Summerlin.
The Howard Hughes Corporation (HHC) was able to make a deal in which they helped to protect 5,000 acres of sensitive land through an exchange of acreage working with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
To this day the HHC continues to uphold the protection of the land and maintains a responsibility to the environment as stewards.
In 1990, the first major park was completed known as The Hills. By 1991, Summerlin's first residents moved in.
